Magda & Jayme
“Nicola is easy to work with, her packages are well-priced and we were very happy with the quality of the photos and album, both for our engagement shoot and wedding. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend!”
A little about me . . .
My career and life over the past 25 years since graduating with distinction in photography at Newcastle College School of Art in 1995 has been rich and varied, and I like to think the different experiences feed into each other – making me all the better behind the lens.
I am a mother of two girls, now teenagers, so am comfortable photographing newborns, children and families. I’ve been there, and know what makes a baby or two-year-old smile and cry – and equally challenging, perhaps, what music to put on to impress a teenager.
My experience photographing families lends itself to weddings with guests of all ages. If you want that cheeky shot of a toddler peeking backward over a church pew, or bridesmaids comparing posies at the reception and Grandma a little tipsy at the champagne bar, I am your photographer. Oh, and I’m married myself – so know all about wedding planning and nerves, as well as the joys.
Before setting up my own portraiture and wedding photography business 20 years ago, from my home studio in Stoke Newington, North London, I cut my teeth in the industry assisting some leading photographers.
I worked for Vogue magazine with Kristoph Klerk (who previously assisted Richard Avedon), for Sandra Lousada on Bride Magazine and children’s fashion shoots for Next and Debenhams, and in Tuscany with location photographer Martin Beckett. I even spent three weeks with world-famous social-documentary photographer Sebastiao Salgado, driving him around London as he worked on a project here.
These formative years gave me a love of the ever-evolving technical side of photography and I now pride myself on this as much as my creativity. I use the latest camera, lighting and editing equipment – and as a sideline to my studio and wedding work, even photograph all in-store displays for Calvin Klein’s and Tommy Hilfiger’s flagships in central London, as well as their wholesale showrooms.
A lot of families also prefer to book an outdoor shoot, as detailed in my portfolio page, and the magic of this is how we can use the natural light of the different seasons. The Great Outdoors can also work wonders for easing people’s inhibitions in front of the camera.
Clearly, we are in difficult times at the moment. But there are still options – some now and others to think about for when the Covid-19 lockdown is eased further. One idea for now is outdoor photography (see portfolio), which uses the natural light of the different seasons and lends itself well to social-distancing.
I hope this gives you a better picture of who I am and how I work. If you would like to discuss a possible shoot, please contact me by using the button below or give me a call on 07852 736 794 - and I look forward to meeting you.
Kind regards, Nicola
