Abney Park Chapel is one of London's most atmospheric venues.The Victorian Gothic chapel sits within Abney Park Cemetery in Stoke Newington, surrounded by ancient woodland, and there is nowhere quite like it in the city.
I have photographed weddings at Abney Park Chapel and it is a venue that requires real photographic skill to do justice to. The light inside the chapel is dramatic and low. The woodland outside creates constantly changing dappled conditions. Both are challenging and both, when handled well, produce images that are completely unlike anything else.
My approach on the day
I arrive early, prepare my equipment, check the light, and then I'm ready for everyone to arrive.
My approach is a mix of candid visual storytelling whereby I capture genuine moments as they unfold, but I also give small amounts of gentle direction for natural looking stylish portraiture. I believe it's important to provide both styles of images for weddings, so you get the unseen moments of the day and also more polished portraiture that is suitable for framing on the wall. I shoot mainly with daylight although fill-in flash will sometimes be used where the light requires it.
The Abney Park nature reserve
Beyond the chapel, the woodland paths and ancient trees of Abney Park offer portrait settings unlike anything else in the area. Couples who choose this venue tend to want something with real character and genuine atmosphere, and that is exactly what they get. The contrast between the Gothic chapel, the ancient magical woodland, and the typical East London streets just beyond the cemetery walls is something quite special.

Every enquiry starts with a consultation call. We go through the details and timeline you have so far, I may make some suggestions and I answer whatever questions you have.
Once you have booked, we can have a second call nearer to the time of your wedding, to finalise your schedule. You will get full coverage for the hours we agree, and your images will be presented in a private online digital gallery in high-resolution with full download/printing rights, delivered in six to eight weeks depending on the time of year.

Abney Park Chapel is licensed for weddings, civil ceremonies and civil partnerships. It is worth checking directly with the venue regarding the specific format and any restrictions. Dogs are permitted too!
Do you cover other venues in East or North London?
You may be familiar with some of the gastro pubs in Stoke Newington, if you are local. One that regularly hosts fabulous wedding receptions is The Londesbrough on Barbauld Road, N16. They are booked out almost every Saturday for private events. Another pub suitable for more intimate weddings is The Clarence Tavern on Stoke Newington Church Street, it has a private dining room upstairs. Both are a great choice when used in combination with Abney Park Chapel for your ceremony, as you and your guests can walk between them.
How familiar am I with the surrounding area?
I am based in Stoke Newington in Hackney and work across the whole of North and East London regularly. This part of the city is my home ground, and that familiarity is useful on a wedding day. I know the traffic, I know the cute cafes on Church Street and I know the best places in the park that could look good as a backdrop for your couple shots.
